Comparison of Public and Private Sector Salaries

A court reporter school is an institution which trains you to become a court reporter, a career which enables you to earn up to a salary of around $45,000 a year. This is of course a high pay considering you don’t have to spend a full 4-year degree at college to gain employment.

Comparison of Public and Private Sector Salaries Comparison of Public and Private Sector SalariesThese days a lot is said about the compensations provided at public and private sector. Often,  the number of public sector jobs is subject to criticism in the private sector and sometimes in the media also especially in a time like this when budget deficit and spending are on everyone’s mind. Even though certain types of jobs are available only in the public sector, comparisons about the salaries given for these jobs in the public and private sector are still difficult to arrive at. Here are some of the reasons for this.

We often find it difficult to compare between public and corporate wages. This is because of the way the comparisons are done. For example consider a common profession such as an accountant, a clerk or a custodian. The fact that an accountant, a clerk or a custodian in the public sector are paid higher than the same job titles in the private sector is quite well known. However, if you associate the salary earned by people in general to their education and experience, government workers will get the advantage obviously as they are always highly qualified than their private sector counterparts.

Also, it’s found that government employee’s salary rate has been increasing at a faster rate than for private sector employees. This happens mainly because there is always a scarcity of people who are well educated and experienced and finding them out is often difficult. It’s a common thing to observe that the job duties will be performed much better when qualifications deemed necessary to obtain the position is also higher. Such applicants will expect for higher compensation rates also. So in order to get qualified employees, better salaries must also be offered to them.

It is also difficult to compare qualifications for a specific job. For example, it is mandatory that you should have an accounting degree if you want to work as an accountant either in the public sector or private sector. But of course there will be a quality and cost difference between a person hired in the public sector and in the public sector. To be qualified in the public sector you need to get your degree from a more authoritative institution like a famous university which is going to cost you more whereas to be an accountant in the private sector a degree issued by a school may be adequate. Unfortunately, these differences are not taken into consideration while doing the comparison between private and public sector employees.

There is another aspect to this. A government entity very rarely worries about the bottom line. Because of this, they can afford they can afford the additional cost it takes to hire experienced and educated people. Governmental agencies are actually under pressure to spend all the allocated funds to them because if they don’t do this, it is assumed that these funds weren’t needed in the first place. So, they hire people who are overqualified and pay them well.

Productivity is another thing to consider while doing the comparison between private and public sector employees. Usually a private sector employee has to work more hours to meet the competition of other businesses and corporations. Public sector don’t have to worry about competition.
